180+ years of history

We're the US insurance division of Legal & General Group — leveraging the expertise of a major global investor and backed by a financial powerhouse.

Built To Last

We've been making long term commitments to customers — and keeping them for over 70 years. It's a recipe that works because Legal & General America continues to back our market-leading competitive position and solid operating performance with exceptional financial strength ratings from three of the world's top ratings agencies.

Our streamlined digital journey uses best-in-class technology to create better experiences for our customers and a more human way to buy and sell life insurance. Keeping our products affordable, protecting Americans and providing high quality service with a human touch is at the heart of what we do.

Our Story By The Numbers

Approximately 98% Investment Grade Portfolio
The Legal & General America operating companies are among the most financially sound life insurers. Our investment portfolio is conservatively positioned and prudently managed. It's highly liquid and well diversified with approximately 98% investment grade corporate bonds and very highly rated structured securities.1

1.5 Million US Customers
That's the number of policy owners counting on us to help provide financial security for the people they have so carefully chosen to protect.1

New Coverage Ranks Us Number Two
Legal & General America is ranked the number two provider of term life insurance in the US, issuing more than $57 billion in new coverage in 2020. We also issued approximately $1.6 billion in new annuity contracts in 2020 to over 26,600 annuitants. 2

$782 Billion of Coverage In Force
Legal & General America is growing; our life insurance in force is over $782 billion.1

Over $6.8 Billion in Invested Assets
Another testament to our financial strength, the Legal & General America operating companies had over $6.8 billion in assets at year-end 2020.3

Capitalization is More Than the Industry Average
The capitalization level of a company is particularly meaningful because it measures a company's solvency. It assesses the level of a company's assets available to pay future liabilities; such as current and future policyholder benefits. On this basis, we are particularly strong. The Pure Capital Ratio measures the cushion a company has against a decline in the value of its assets. Our Pure Capital Ratio was 17.8%, more than the industry average of 12.1%.4

Delivering value and security

Financial strength ratings

A COMDEX score is a composite of all the financial strength ratings a company has received, ranging from 1-100. Not many life companies have a score as high as ours.

Very Strong Rating Fitch and S&P

S&P's has been rating the financial strength of insurance companies for over 40 years. They reaffirmed the AA- (Very Strong) rating we share with our parent company. Fitch Ratings reaffirmed the Insurer Financial Strength (IFS) ratings at AA- (Very Strong).

Superior Rating A.M. Best
A.M. Best financial strength rating is an independent opinion of an insurer's overall financial strength and ability to meet its ongoing obligations.
